A FLIP-FLOP

One day I sat and wrote a list
Of names so long and neat,
I wrote across the page top
These were the people I could beat.

From that day for a very long time
I carried that list around,
And one day as we played some ball
That list fell to the ground.

One of the boys did pick it up,
He opened it to see
The words I wrote across the top,
Then gave it back to me.

I returned it to my pocket,
He spoke of what he had seen,
One of the boys didn't like my list
And he was big and mean.

I started to slowly walk away,
But found I had to stop.
He asked about his own name
And I said it was on the top.

This made him very, very mad,
My head he wished to break;
I stood my ground and let him know,
That was something I would not take.

He reached out to grab me
While waving his gigantic fist,
I told him he left me no alternative
But to remove his name from my list.

To do the things we think we can
Does not always turn out right;
You can solve your problems in many ways
All of which make more sense than to fight.

AN AMERICAN SPEAKS

I am an American and I am Black,
Some in this land seek to send me back
To a land I have never visited or seen,
Or deny me the rights which to them are routine.

They feel I don’t need a good place to live,
Or the educational training, that will help me to give.
The things to my family which theirs can enjoy,
In their eyes I am and shall remain a boy.

They reject the concept of  brotherhood,
And feel deep within, that I never should
Have a job which would pay what I am worth,
As if they own all these things on earth.

They insult my manhood and covet my wife,
And when I react, threaten to take my life,
There is so much which we all know is wrong,
Some will even say, go back where you belong.

I am an American, this is my homeland,
Yet things happen here I cannot understand,
Done by people of another race,
All of whom claim they come from some other place.

They are German, Greek, Italian, French,
Dutch,  or whatever, but it makes no sense
To live in a Land as great as our own,
And claim some other to be your home.

As we look back in history we see the same,
The ones who were here when Columbus came,
Were of red skin, so America is theirs alone,
Yet the whites have called it, their very own.

Yes, I’m as American as a black man can be,
And there is a point I’d like non-blacks to see,
If  we leave this land as some think we should do,
Let our ships be preceded by ones filled with you.

A LOOK AT CHRISTMAS

Christmas comes but once a year
And to me that is just grand,
You do not agree with me you say?
Let me tell you where I stand.

The day is centered around what we get,
Involved with presents and such,
Most people get things they do not want
Because they have so much.

We buy a gift for a relative, friend
or spouse and it looks so nice,
In the store we may look at the gift,
But we only see the price.

There is a deeper meaning that day
Which most of us seem to forget,
The birthday of God's only Son,
Some don't accept Him yet.

Our Savior had a lowly birth
Though He was a King's King,
His birth brought forth a shining star
And choirs of angels to sing.

He came to teach us love and joy,
And rules by which to live,
Helping others whenever we can,
Always ready to forgive.

So, as we look forward to
The day our Lord was born,
Think of the manger and the cross,
The joy of Easter morn.

We give our gifts at Christmas but,
God gave us the best gift yet,
Try giving the best gift that you can
With no thought of what you may get.

To get in the spirit of the day
Here's one thing you can do,
Give your gifts to someone in need,
'Twill have an effect on you.

We all would come out far ahead
If  we could find a way
To live as Christ would have us live
And make Christmas Everyday.
